If you’d like to learn more about these biases and others, review the Art of Critical Decision Making recording set by Michael A. Roberto (2009) and “Thinking about the Hidden Traps in Decision Making” by John S. Hammond, Ralph L. Keeney, and Howard Raiffa (1998).

• Conduct a SWOT Analysis (Internal Environment Scan)

An integral step that often gets left out of planning for any service is assessment of our own abilities, time, and skills. Emergencies arise, projects grow into time vampires, and even the best planner cannot foresee how large or small patron reaction will be to a new service. What if your service becomes instantly, wildly popular? It can happen in a very short period of time, especially if you’ve done a solid audience needs analysis as suggested earlier in this chapter. On the other hand, what if the project flounders? What next steps will you take, and what do you have time for? Will you be able to keep projects going on for an indefinite time period, or will you need to schedule particular parts of the year in which you hold contests or hype particular things? What if your project requires outside help from someone in web services, administration, or marketing?

If you choose to start very small with your social media plans, this section may be very easy for you. But, if you want to make a dramatic change, aren’t sure how to potentially divide up your labor, or have had issues making plans stick in the past, you may want to do a more thorough analysis. In the business world this process is known as SWOT analysis—it is used to assess strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. This section is largely about how you can turn weaknesses and threats into strengths or opportunities.
